October marks the two year anniversary of the wonderful Abominable Book Club and the celebratory box was absolutely incredible. There are two different subscriptions and, as money is a little tighter than usual, I’m on the Bare Bones box which includes a new book, a second hand book, a magazine and a book mark – all for £15 + postage. Absolutely worth it IMO. Read on to see what was included for the anniversary.
Venus in the Blind Spot by Junji Ito
Blurb – A “best of” collection of creepy tales from Eisner award winner and legendary horror master Junji Ito. This striking collection presents the most remarkable short works of Junji Ito’s career, featuring an adaptation of Rampo Edogawa’s classic horror story “Human Chair” and fan favorite “The Enigma of Amigara Fault.” With a deluxe presentation—including special color pages, and showcasing illustrations from his acclaimed long-form manga No Longer Human—each chilling tale invites readers to revel in a world of terror.
I think even if you weren’t into graphic novels this book would be a winner – it is absolutely gorgeous. Every part of this hardback has been put together with so much care and attention, it’s a stunning addition to my bookshelves. Luckily the stories inside are just as twisted and horrific as the book is beautiful. Proper special.
The Invitation by Diane Hoh
Blurb – It arrives on crisp ivory paper, printed in elegant gold writing – an invitation to the social event of the year: Cass Rockham’s annual Autumn Party. But why has Cass invited Sarah and her four friends? They aren’t rich or popular like the rest of Cass’ crowd. Is there some darker meaning behind the invitation? Soon, Sarah discovers that she and her friends are in terrible danger. They haven’t been invited to a party – they’ve been invited…to die.
I was kind of amused to get a Point Horror title to be honest – it was really unexpected but a welcome trip down memory lane. I spent a rainy Saturday morning reading it and while obviously it will never be a favourite book it was nostalgic as hell and I’m glad they sent it.
Black Static Magazine Issue #76
I’ve not had time to get round to reading this one yet but it looks as full of great horror stories as ever. This is a really great publication and I’m always happy to get a copy.
The bookmarks from ABC are proper special as they always have a bonus wee mini story printed on the back – a thoughtful addition to the already wonderfully curated box.
I really can’t recommend this subscription more. If you go for the full experience you’ll get some hot drinks and sweet treats to enjoy along with your reads and having subbed to that in the past I can say it’s worth it too. But if you’re just all about the reads and craving a spooky treat every month the Bare Bones Box is where it’s at. Subscriptions open on the first of each month.
By the way, if you fancy trying without subscribing there are some £9.99 grab bags (which include THREE books) available.
Do you subscribe to Abominable Book Club or any other bookish subscriptions? What ones do you recommend?
